William the Composter has been chosen as the name for the new food waste collection vehicles in Hastings, Rother and Wealden after a competition across local schools to name the new trucks. The competition was launched in schools to encourage fun and creative learning about food waste, ahead of the start of weekly food waste collections across the three council areas from the end of March.

The competition sparked a feast of creativity, serving up a delicious platter of pun entries, such as Sir-eats-a-lot, The Very Hungry Caddy-Filler, and Peels on Wheels.

William the Composter was eventually chosen after a public vote. The winning entry was submitted by the pupils of Pevensey and Westham Primary School.

Cllr Jo Walker, lead for Environment and Neighbourhood Wellbeing at Hastings BC and Chair of the East Sussex Joint Waste Partnership, congratulated the local school saying William the Composter was an “excellent choice of name.” She added: “The competition has been a good way to get the message about the introduction of food waste collections out across all ages.”
