HELEN MURPHY and NICK PELLING

Recently, the ceramicist Liz Emtage passed a significant double milestone in her life-long creative career: her studio-shop has now been open on King’s Road for ten years, but she also realised that she has now been on a journey with clay for forty years in total. She explained that she first plunged her hand into potter’s clay at the age of five and was immediately smitten.

We stopped in at the studio for free tea and the delicious cake on offer in her shop as part of a little celebration of her anniversaries. She pointed out that although she has been on King’s Road for ten years, she’s only recently changed its name to Liz Emtage Ceramic Studio and had previously been trading as Pelham’s. It was clear when we were there – by the number of people who dropped in just to say hello – that Liz is a popular person on the King’s Road. It was also clear that people of all ages are enticed into the shop.

A SOFT TRANSLUSCENCE

The space inside is something of a luminous Aladdin’s Cave with all manner of ceramics hiding in alcoves or on shelves, most of which would make beautiful additions to any home. It is fair to say that she somewhat specializes in translucent porcelain lamp shades of all shapes and sizes. These really are quite delightful, as they allow a soft light to emanate through the surface, which frequently features intricate organic patterning. But, there is much more to seek out, such as exquisite and delicate cups, plates, tiles and numerous other little gems.

Liz also frequently runs ceramic workshops for all ages and levels of ability. These are not only about developing skills but also can be very sociable, and even therapeutic events. It’s evident that this is so much more than a shop: it’s a working studio. Liz seemed very cheerful on the day so clearly working with clay for so long is good for the soul.
