Wake Up & Feelthe Colour
HELEN MURPHY AND NICK PELLING
There is a particularly vibrant exhibition coming up at Unit 2 on London Road. The show is entitled Wake Up &. The artist is Sophie Malpas, an upcoming multi-media artist whose work is rooted in play, colourful collisions and the sheer fun to be had in the physicality of making.

This show will be her biggest solo exhibition to date and she admits that in some ways it involves stepping outside her comfort zone. But then risk-taking with any materials is always part of the process. Her paintings display a clear interest in the psychology of colour and the way that juxtapositions of hues can elicit different emotions in the viewer. She hopes that ultimately joy is in the eye of the beholder. Certainly, her colour palette seemed to have something of the summer in it, with shades of Matisse.
Sophie originally studied at Falmouth University but she has achieved a great deal in a short time. Since 2021 she has been based in the St Leonards area and worked on numerous community projects such as Sounds of Creativity with Hastings International Piano and Follow That Duck as part of the Wild In Art organisation which helped to raise thousands of pounds for St Michael’s Hospice.
With or without ducks, the show promises to be quite intriguing and just the colourful dose of sunsplash that we all need.
The show begins
on 20 February at 6pm and continues throughout that weekend.
