The Government has launched a new UK Town of Culture competition as part of efforts to renew the nation’s cultural landscape. The initiative is aimed at towns of all sizes across the country, seeking to drive investment, foster lasting community pride, and widen access to the arts. Hastings Borough Council’s Deputy Leader Cllr Julia Hilton has confirmed that the council intends to put forward a bid on behalf of Hastings.

Towns have until 31 March to submit an expression of interest. An expert panel, chaired by Sir Phil Redmond, will then judge entries based on their unique storytelling, community inclusion, and deliverability. Shortlisted towns will be notified in the spring, and they will each receive £60,000 to develop their full bids.

The overall winner will be chosen early next year. In addition to the prestigious 2028 crown, it will secure a £3 million prize to deliver a year-long cultural programme, showcasing local stories through new arts venues, performances, and workshops.

Local MP Helena Dollimore said that the competition “gives us all the chance to celebrate everything that makes our area special, our history, our creativity, and our people. With the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition later this year there has never been a better moment for us to be aiming high. Every week, I meet incredible people here, from artists to musicians to volunteers who make our Bonfire nights happen and our lifeboats run. Their energy, talent, and dedication make us truly unique, and it’s why we deserve this moment.”
