Sussex-based community benefit society Energise Sussex Coast (ESC) won a national Community Energy Initiative Award last week at a national ceremony in Bristol.

In making the 2023 award the Regen’s Green Energy judging panel “recognise[d] the role of inspiring community energy groups across the UK supporting the transition to a more democratic and decentralised energy system”.

ESC has worked to tackle fuel poverty for 11 years. Last year, their energy advice service helped 860 struggling households to save an average of £409 on energy costs per household. The group has also helped local communities and businesses deliver a wide range of community-owned solar projects.

ESC Director Richard Watson celebrated the news: “We were shortlisted alongside some really impressive projects so it took a moment for it to sink in that we really had won! We’re passionate about what we do within our local communities, and to have what we’ve achieved recognised by the rest of the industry is absolutely fantastic.”
