Take a Seat
This spring, Tschabalala Self’s first public sculpture, Seated, comes to the De La Warr Pavilion, outside on the lawn, facing the sea. According to the DWP: “Standing three metres high and made from patinated bronze, this monumental work uses an everyday object – a seat – as an entry point for questions of permission and performance within public space. Its subject – poised, immaculately dressed, glancing to her left – emboldens onlookers to sit with confidence and comfort.” Until 9 October 2023
Family Fish
Molly Tompsett, daughter of Hastings fisherman Neil (“fishing’s been in the family for 200 years”) was recently commissioned by the National Student Drama Festival to make a short film about the local fishing community on Hastings Beach. It follows Neil and skipper Roland Kelly, “depicting the harsh realities” of the British fishing industry – and looking at how it has been affected by the rise of gentrification and the influx of holiday lets and Airbnbs in East Sussex.

Jazzing it up
It’s hard to keep up with local jazz combo Fabulous Red Diesel’s whirlwind dates around the Southeast – London, Essex and Hove – in the past few weeks alone. But you might be able to catch them when they return to Ronnie Scott’s on 9 July.
They’re organising another minibus from Hastings, and you can book your seat by contacting Kat at [email protected]
Spanish Twist
Expect first class music and singing with a Spanish twist, from De Falla to Bizet and Carmen, with some “Latino influenced jazz to create a party atmosphere at the Uplands”. It’s Barefoot Opera’s celebration of Cinco de Mayo – somewhat confusingly on 20 May!
5.00-7.30pm and tickets (from barefootopera.com) that include a cocktail, aperitivos and music. ¡Olé!
Nashing of Teeth
Well you might, if you miss the legendary Graham Nash – founding member of The Hollies, and Crosby, Stills and Nash – when he ‘drops into’ Bexhill later this year on his Sixty Years of Songs and Stories tour. A self-described ‘simple man’, Nash was inducted twice into the Songwriters Hall of Fame for his work with CSN and as a solo artist.
It’s at Bexhill’s De La Warr on 30 August 2023. Tickets are on sale now.
