Artist Spotlight
Sarah Milne: Persephone
Sarah Milne is a fibre artist using contemporary embroidery, weaving, basketry and mixed media to produce wall hangings and sculptural work. Her art explores fragmentation and repair throughout our human lifecycle, and what we can learn from nature about growth and transformation after trauma and disintegration.

Sarah says “I like using damaged and discarded materials to create something new and interesting. I start a piece by printing or mark-making on vintage or reclaimed fabric, using items I find in nature or abandoned on the beach. I then look for the stories the marks and patterns show me, and how they relate to my experiences in life.
All my work is deeply personal but talks about themes most can relate to in their own life. ‘Persephone’ is the first in a series of ink-and-stitch on old hospital sheets. The series explores the struggle I experienced to be an individual and find a sense of place and belonging in the world through a period of life when I spent many long months in hospital with my son.
The series will be part of my solo exhibition with Hastings Art School from October 5th – 9th in Priory Meadow.
