World Book Day is an annual celebration of books and reading, which this year falls on 6 March.

World Book Day

It is the day when thousands of school pupils will dress as their favourite book-based character and will receive a £1 book token to redeem for one of a series of special books published on the day.

Here in Hastings, with five independent bookshops and a growing community of writers and illustrators living in the town, there’s a chance for grown-ups to join in the fun too, as the teams behind the Hastings Book Festival and the Hastings Book Festival Fringe are putting on a bit of a party at Barnaby’s Lounge in the town centre.

Dr Tola Dabiri, one of the organisers commented: “The evening will offer a chance to meet other writers, readers and book lovers, share details of what people are reading at the moment, find out more about this year’s Book and Fringe Festivals, and maybe even sign up as a volunteer or a contributor. Whatever your interest, we’d love to meet you.”

The World Book Day event happens 6 to 8pm on 6 March at Barnaby’s Lounge, at 46 Robertson Street.
