The Ageing Well Festival
It’s not too late to take part
East Sussex Seniors’ Association have been celebrating Older People’s Day (1st October) for 13 years with events across the county. This year they decided to “shake things up” with the support of seniors’ forums across the County and have launched an all new Ageing Well Festival with the aim of “bringing a vibrant and empowering outlook on life after 50”.
The Ageing Well Festival celebrates all the things that over 50s contribute to our communities. The idea is to inspire people to live long and fulfilled lives, demonstrate that you’re never too old to improve your health and wellbeing and “above all have fun”.

In line with events across the country, the festival has been adapted to promote a whole range of virtual events as well as a series of inspirational stories. Although the festival began earlier in the month there is still time to benefit from the series of informative events, quizzes and creative activities.
And there’s support for anyone who isn’t confident about the technology of the new ‘virtual life’. You just let them know at the time of booking if you think you might need help getting online.
Participating organisations include:
The Oyster Project: with four events involving mindfulness, relaxation techniques and gentle movement. Inter-generational musical line drawing gives you “the key to unlocking the freedom of your own world expressing yourself through mark making on paper”.
HAIRE (an international organisation for promoting healthy living): conversations on topics such as the psychology of loneliness, ageing well and finding purpose in later life.
Sussex Housing & Care: a one-stop shop tutorial for exploring Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and more.
Hourglass (supporting older people affected by abuse and exploitation): talking about local community-based services they will be providing to help older people live well in Sussex.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission: talking about their work as well as giving a guided tour of Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey to discuss the importance of remembrance.
South East Water & Southern Water: giving advice on what your water companies offer in the way of financial and non-financial help.
Eastbourne Dementia Action Alliance: on how living with dementia affects a person and how to help and support them in a more understanding way.
Pilates class from Active Hastings: a gentle introduction to what a typical class would look like.
Meridian Mature Citizens Forum: A chance for the talented (and not so) to share their own poetry, prose or favourite poems with others.
And there’s much more, including a series of virtual quizzes, and stories to inspire.
