Hear Me Roar
Women’s Voice presents Hear Me Roar, a festival for International Women’s Day.

We are excited to announce our celebration for International Women’s Day 2023, taking place on Sunday 12 March we have gathered together a selection of inspirational projects, remarkable women and fantastic performers.
Running from 11.00-16.00 there will be opportunities to hear from four inspirational women who support and stand in solidarity with women from every community within our town: Rossana Leal, founder of The Refugee Buddy Project; Claudine Eccleston, creator of Playing the Race Card, and organiser of the annual Martin Luther King Day celebrations; Antonia Berelson, RCN striker; and Bella Fashola, RMT Cleaners steward.
Join in workshops from Wing Chun Kung Fu, Stitch TLC, Rheda’s Dream Morris and add your favourite female to our inspirational wxman mural.
Listen to music from Cordelia Gartside, Carol Prior and SHE Choir, poetry selected by A Load of Poets and a spoken word performance by Debra Watson. Watch This is Not Love, a film produced by Women’s Voice on the theme of coercive control and violence against women during lockdown.
Find out about numerous local women-led organisations who are joining us to highlight the support for womxn within the town including Arts on Prescription, Black Butterfly, Eggtooth, iRock, Rainbow Alliance and The Refugee Buddy Project.
A spokeswoman from Women’s Voice said: “After nearly three years of socially-restricted events, we wanted to organise a festival to celebrate International Women’s Day, showcasing the amazing work being done by women locally and hear from some inspirational women and talented performers. We’re keen for more womxn to get involved with us so we’re looking forward to meeting new faces during this fun, informative and inspiring day.”

International Women’s Day events across town
Wednesday 8 March
Arts on Prescription hosted events at Art in the Park to celebrate International Women’s Day. A talk on Marianne North, local Edwardian artist and eco-visionary was followed by a picnic in the park, and the opportunity to draw, paint or write about an inspiration woman. Later Wednesday afternoon The Art of Protest took place at The Common Room, Cambridge Road. People were invited to make banners and placards highlighting women with artist Lorna Vahey, well known for her colourful political banners. The finished artworks will be displayed at the Hear Me Roar event.
Friday 10 March
1200 Postcards will host a private view of Suffragette City, a solo show by Louise Whitham of unusual portraits of women who shaped our town. It takes place at 80 Queen’s Road, 19.00, entrance free. The exhibition runs from 10 March to 9 April.
Saturday 11 March
The first ever Women’s Jazz Festival takes place on Saturday 11 March. Intended to become an annual event, the music ranges from soul, R&B, jazz-folk and original indie-jazz. All events are free from 16.00 until midnight in Hastings Old Town. Sunday 11 March
Following Hear Me Roar on Sunday 12, there will be a performance of the multi-media show Vivienne Sometimes from 18.00-19.00 pm at The Stade Hall. Tickets £10 Bookings: tinyurl.com/VivienneSometimes; viviennesometimes.com.
From 18.00-20.00pm that evening, all female-identifying musicians are invited to an Open Mic organised by Loud Women, at The Piper, St Leonards.
