The four-week course, held in Battle Abbey School’s warm indoor pool in Bexhill, is ideal for adults who are completely new to the sport or who want to rebuild confidence in a safe and supportive setting. All equipment is provided, and no previous experience is needed.

Participants will learn core paddling skills, including efficient forward paddling, balance and stability, effective turning, and safe capsize-and-recovery techniques in a variety of craft. The course is designed to give a solid foundation before moving on to open-water paddling.

Hastings Paddle SC is a long-established, volunteer-run organisation based just metres from the sea at West of Haven on Cinque Ports Way. Throughout British Summer Time, members meet for its Tuesday evening club night. It runs regular coastal trips along the Sussex shoreline, inland river journeys, training sessions, and weekends away to popular locations such as Anglesey, Devon and Dorset. These trips give members the chance to experience dynamic water and tidal conditions under the guidance of qualified leaders.

Safety and skills development are at the heart of the club’s activities. Members take part in dry-training evenings throughout the year, covering topics such as navigation, radio communications, journey planning and first-aid refreshers. The club also works closely with local maritime and rescue services and has participated in joint training exercises with emergency teams. The club is an active partner in Foreshore Trust initiatives promoting safe and accessible coastal recreation.
