Supermarket Giveaway
The supermarket chain Aldi says it provided more than 37,000 meals to people in Hastings and Sussex over the Christmas and New Year period by donating surplus food from its stores.
It teamed up with a number of local and national charities and helped to deliver the produce after closing early on Christmas and New Year’s Eves.
The firm is in partnership with community giving platform Neighbourly who, it said, found that charitable organisations faced increasing pressure over the winter period, with four in five charities saying demand for their services had risen over the past six months and demand for foodbanks and other food provision expected to increase by nearly 30% over the colder months.
Local Grants Announced
The Foreshore Trust, which is administered by Hastings Borough Council is inviting applications from registered charities, non-profit voluntary and community organisations for money from its Large Grant Programme 2026-2028.
Applicants for a share in the £180,000 available need to be from organisations that work for the benefit of Hastings residents. Specifically they say the programme will focus on Housing, legal, welfare, and debt advice; Support for those affected by domestic violence; advice and infrastructure support for community organisations; outreach services for rough sleepers; and advice and support for migrant and newly settled communities.
Applications close on 28 January and further details are available from the council website
Bexhill Road Traffic Delays
The council warns that work has started along the A259 Bexhill Road to update the gas network between the junctions of Freshfields and Haven Road. This work will take around ten weeks. Temporary traffic lights are in place.
To help minimise disruption they say there should be a worker on site from 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturdays to control the traffic lights to help manage the flow of vehicles as efficiently as possible. But local MP Helena Dollimore is demanding to know why no one was working there when she visited the single lane traffic flow on a recent Thursday afternoon. She said she found long queues of traffic and believes that two-way traffic would be possible with narrower lanes. In a video posted on Facebook she says she will be taking up the situation with Southern Gas.
Congestion along this busy route to Bexhill and the Ravenside Retail Park is already causing long waits.
