Debenhams store in Robertson Street, which reopened on 12th April for final stock clearance before the premises are vacated, will close for the last time on Tuesday 4th May. Queues of mask-wearing shoppers have at times snaked round the block, as they wait to snap up discount bargains – mostly
of at least 50% and, for some fashion and home items, up to 80% – of original prices.

The future of the building is not clear, but it seems likely that at least some of the floorspace will be converted to residential units.

The premises of another former major retail outlet in the town centre, Peacocks in Queens Road, which offered discount clothing, footwear and accessories, remain empty and are being marketed for re-letting. A rumour circulating on local social media in recent days that Waitrose was waiting in the wings to open a store there has no apparent basis, other than giving the opportunity for threads of comment on the extent of DFL (Down from London) and OFB (Over from Brighton) gentrification sweeping into town.
