The Chatsworth Hotel in Carlisle Parade, which has been closed since February, has been sold to the Buckswood School in Guestling.

The hotel enjoys a prime sea-facing location and was used until last year to house more than 70 asylum seekers. The conditions they enjoyed, however, were far from salubrious. They were described by one visitor as being “horrendous” with rubbish piling up in the corridors, water leaking in the communal areas, and overcrowding.

The building has been empty since last September when the Jali Indian restaurant, based within the ground floor, closed its doors. There were ambitious plans for the hotel to be fully renovated but these never materialised, and the decision was taken to sell the building.

The Buckswood School describes itself as “a very British school, a global outlook”. It is believed the hotel will be used to house the schools’ international students.
