Last year we were privileged to see the eminent Rustavi choir from Georgia, who filled the Henry Ward Hall with their powerful voices and love of song. Now it’s the turn of Lalkhori, a highly acclaimed vocal and dance ensemble from the mountainous Svaneti region. They teach and perform the unique and beautiful polyphonic songs of Georgia, including dance. They will offer a workshop, teaching songs (all taught by ear, so there’s no need to know the language or read music) and simple round dances. They also offer a concert and the Georgian tradition of the supra, a shared meal with toasts and traditional songs sung in an intimate setting. Food is also served tapas style at the table, so that guests may help themselves at any time.

This supra will be a ‘bring and share’ meal. Guests are invited to bring a food contribution and to help with setting up and clearing away. Further details and guidance are provided to ticket holders.

Due to its remoteness, the Svaneti area preserves many of the most ancient features of Georgian polyphonic singing and culture. The tuning and intonation evoke a deep connection to the past, while the many ritual songs and dances (now UNESCO-listed) celebrate and preserve a heritage of shamanic beliefs and folklore, which have survived through the centuries alongside, and intermingled with, Christian belief and practice.

This will be one more of the many fascinating and brilliant events that Hastings attracts. Definitely unmissable.
