Sometimes things just happen. On a fading Sunday afternoon in late summer in St Leonards, we discovered as we ambled along that ‘The Three Legs’ brewery had crawled up the Kings Road and established a Pop-Up at the mysterious shop entitled ‘Introduced.’ It was being run enthusiastically by some hop-loving young artisan brewers. As part of our commitment to serious research in HIP, we felt forced to go in and see what was going on. It turned out that ‘The Three Legs’ local brewery had adopted the site to try out its new Saison beer on those passers-by prepared to give it a swig. This proved to be quite a few.
And what exactly is a Saison beer? I hear you ask. Well, we can report it was originally a beer chosen by French seasonal workers as the best put forward from the assortment of local farms: in other words, the beer of choice for seasoned farm hands. The particular beer offered in this Pop-Up was challengingly sour, but apparently deliberately so. Indeed, Chris Hughes, one of the three-legged enthusiasts, told us that it had taken three years to perfect this vinegar-sweet, ambiguous ale in Chardonnay barrels. Later, other arty types turned up and we can verify that the Saison beer clarified much about Chuck Berry solos and how to fuel a magic carpet. Quite some liquid.
• For those keen to widen the field of research, the brewery has a tap in Heist in Norman Road.
