Female Heroes Launch Scene & Heard Festival
JANE MIDWINTER
Thursday 5 June marked the inspiring launch of the Scene & Heard Festival at The Stables Theatre, and the official opening of the Female Heroes exhibition – a moving tribute to 14 extraordinary women whose contributions have shaped and uplifted their communities.

Nominated by those who have witnessed their courage, kindness, strength, and impact at first hand, these women are celebrated not as singular figures but as part of a collective brilliance. The exhibition honours their stories through a powerful blend of portrait photography and immersive soundscapes.
The portraits, taken by acclaimed photographer and creative specialist Rachel Kiley, capture the individuality spirit, and energy of each featured woman. Accompanying these visual pieces are recorded soundscapes in which the women share their stories – raw, insightful and deeply personal. These voices bring the exhibition to life and offer audiences an unforgettable emotional experience.
Guests at the launch were invited to explore the exhibition, enjoy refreshments and experience an excerpt from the soundscape. The evening continued in the theatre with performances of two one-act plays – The Cagebirds and White Lead – presented as part of the wider Scene & Heard Festival, which this year is led by women. As the evening drew to a close, attendees were invited to raise a glass to the women being honoured – and to the ongoing importance of women’s stories being seen and heard.
This exhibition is not about singling out individuals, but about shining a light on the many ways women are shaping our communities. It’s a privilege to share their stories – full of honesty, humour, strength, and insight.
Running till 21 June, the festival features a rich and diverse program including music, poetry, theatre, and a suite of creative workshops covering storytelling, poetry, photography, scriptwriting, dance, clowning, and more.
