Laughter Clubs come to Hastings
Catherine Demir brings a healthy mirth to town, with her own take on a new national exercise, already very popular in Brighton. Catherine will run her Laughter Clubs, in separate sessions for families and adults, at Westfield Community Centre.
The idea comes from a practice called Laughter Yoga, which was established in India in 1995, by Dr Madan Kataria; although the only part of Catherine’s classes involving yoga, as we know it, is some deep breathing.
Laughing can increase the supply of oxygen to the blood, boosting your immune system and energising and recharging your metabolism. Plus, it’s just a huge bit of fun.
Children laugh on average 400 times a day, while adults average out at just 15. The body also cannot tell the difference between a fake laugh and a real one, so sometimes, in a Laughter class, you might start off a little uncertain and forced, but naturally this turns into real laughter, as it all becomes very contagious!
Classes begin with the introduction of gentle warm up techniques, which are then followed by laughter exercises. At the end of the class participants are relaxed and come away de-stressed, even invigorated! In a world where we are all so busy, many of us unreasonably worried and trying to chase our tails all the time, this kind of class is a welcome break. An hour of laughter: you can’t go wrong!
Catherine will begin her classes in September. The Family Laughter Club will begin at 10am on Sunday 2nd September, then continue every first Sunday of the month. It welcomes parents and children at a price of £4 per adult, £2 per child. The regular Laughter Club, begins on Sunday 16th September at 10am and will be held every third Sunday thereafter. It will cost £6 and be followed by tea/coffee and biscuits.
• Classes will be held at Westfield Community Centre, Workhouse Lane, TN35 4QJ.
