Walkers in the Country Park who stroll down Fairlight Glen may be traversing a former minefield. In May 1956 a bomb disposal unit from the Royal Engineers was dispatched to the area to clear mines laid as part of the UK’s WW2 coastal defences. 

There’s a short black and white clip of a contemporary BBC news report about this little-known piece of local history, plus several others featuring events from Hastings’ past, on the new BBC Rewind.

The BBC has long kept extensive visual and sound archives and has been painstakingly digitising them. Now, in the year of the national broadcaster’s 100th anniversary, it’s launched a location searchable, online service Rewind allowing people to discover lost and unknown radio and TV treasures.
