Art to Gladden Your Heart
A new digital platform is set to transform the local art scene by breaking down barriers between artists and art lovers in Sussex. Art Lending Library introduces an innovative rental model that allows residents to enjoy original artwork in their own homes or businesses without the need for a heavy upfront financial investment. The platform is designed to make the burgeoning South Coast art market accessible and straightforward. Members can join the exclusive club for a nominal yearly fee, gaining the opportunity to rent original pieces from a curated selection for a minimum of one month, with no long-term obligations.

The service caters to a variety of needs, from individuals looking to rotate artwork regularly in their homes or dress a room for a special occasion, to homeowners and estate agents seeking to upgrade a property’s visual impact whilst it is on the market. Art Lending Library will initially operate within East Sussex, from Tonbridge Wells down to Rye and across the coast to Lewes. In addition to supporting art lovers, Art Lending Library provides a new platform for talented local artists. By placing their work into constant circulation, the platform creates a steady, alternative income stream for art makers while ensuring that their pieces are actively appreciated in real home environments. Prominent local artists so far obtained for the Library include: Siobhan Stanley, Robert Sample, Victoria Kiff, Paul Sayers, Kirsten Reynolds, Patrick Altes and James MacKinnon.
While the Art Lending Library operates digitally, it also places a deep emphasis on personal connection. The platform manages the rental process, but the core relationship remains between the artist and the member. Adding a unique richness to the experience, artists will personally help members select the perfect spot for the artwork in their homes. The library will also host two physical events each year to bring interested members of the local community together with artists. Although renting is the primary focus, members who fall in love with a piece have the option to buy it , with any rent already paid deducted from the final sale price. Alternatively, artists may offer signed and numbered limited-edition prints. All rental and sale prices will be transparently listed on the platform’s website.
The recent launch of this project at the Masonic Hall in St Leonards indicated a well-organised project with enthusiastic promoters and a host of interested visitors. A number of quality art works that have already been secured were on display around the room. A promising start to an interesting facility.
£50 annual membership allows people to rent work and be invited to special Art Lending Library events. Renting work is then £100 monthly for works up to £2500 value, £150 monthly for work up to £5,000 value. Anyone can buy work from the site. artlendinglibrary.co.uk. The founders of the project are Mary Long and Amanda Plummer, and both live locally.
