HOCKEY: Saxon Warrior Takes Final Bow
Michael Acott – ‘Micky’ – had two reasons to celebrate this month. It was his 70th birthday. And he played his last game for South Saxons after a career of 54 seasons at the club.

Micky made his name as a no-nonsense top quality goalkeeper, outfield player and a senior respected umpire and official. He has been and continues to be a great hockey ambassador, serving as President of Sussex Hockey and holding positions with England Hockey.
A good crowd were entertained at the Bexhill Academy pitch to a very competitive friendly game where an arch of honour was provided as a mark of respect. He was deservedly named ‘Man of the Match’.
The current Saxons men’s first team suffered heavy defeat at Bexhill last Saturday, conceding six goals to a superior Guildford M3 side before Joshua Sheffield scored an eventual consolation goal. However, three successive wins in January have put them well above the relegation zone in Division 1 West of the South-East Hockey League.
No such triumphs for the women’s team, who have now lost all 17 of their league matches this season, the latest reverse a 6-0 drubbing by Old Georgians 3 at Bexhill last Saturday. Best chance to avoid a season’s whitewash may come on 7 March when they host second-bottom Horsham 2.
