The World Crazy Golf Championships, played annually on the crazy course (the one with the windmills) on Hastings seafront, was won last weekend for the second successive year by Adam Kelly, 27. In a seven-round contest spread over two days of hot sunshine and minimal breeze, he overcame American Frank Bisesi by five strokes with an overall score of 217 – an average of 31 per round.

After five rounds he, Bisesi and a third contender Ed Pope were tied in a three-way contest on 157. However, Kelly’s experience under pressure proved too much for his two rivals. In the sixth round they each carded a 35, while he shot a 32 to open up a three-shot advantage. In the final round he played almost immaculately to complete the course in 28 shots – that’s eight holes in one and the other ten in two – to seal deserved victory.

Kelly said afterwards: “I’m over the moon to have defended the title against the biggest field to date. In the final round, Frank Bisesi and Ed Pope put the pressure on me, forcing me to produce one of my best ever rounds in the competition. I’m already looking forward to defending the title again next year.”

Simon Tompkins, director of Hastings Adventure Golf, said: “It’s
been hot on and off the course. The two-day event played in scorching conditions not only tested the players’ putting skills, but hydration skills too. Adam Kelly kept his cool.”

Tompkins also congratulated Murray Thompson on winning the novice event in five shots under par (two per hole).
