Next Monday (27 October) the Jenny Lind pub will host a charity marathon organised by the Hastings Bar Billiards league. Money will be raised for the Macmillan cancer charity and in memory of the league’s late chairman Bob Osbourne.

Several league players and their partners have been affected by cancer over the last few years; Bob died from a combination of leukemia, stroke and diabetes. The aim is to heighten awareness of these diseases. It is the second successive year of the event, which is intended to be held annually. Last year’s inaugural marathon raised over £1,000.

Teams of four players will play as many frames of bar billiards as can be squeezed in between 12 noon and closing time, attempting to accumulate a score that exceeds last year’s total of 147,000. The participants managed 23 frames last year.

Each frame will raise at least £4, and both players and onlookers will be encouraged to contribute towards the overall fund in collecting tins, subscriptions to a raffle, and/or via a Just Giving page.

The league provides competition for about 40 players, spread between six teams from four pubs in the Old Town, Clive Vale and Ore – two each from the Jenny Lind and the Cutter, one each from the Ashburnham and the Old King John. Matches take place each Wednesday over the winter on three-pin rules, home and away. These are followed by a handicap competition and cup games. There’s a separate summer competition played on the four-pin variant.

The league will also be holding a two-day, four-pin team and open three-pin cup competition over a weekend next June.

Each team is open to new or returning players, and it’s hoped that more pubs in the area will be encouraged to invest in their own tables.
