Become a pro-noun
By Ella Wormley-Healing (she/her)
On Wednesday 17th October this year, there will be the first International Pronouns Day. We all use pronouns every day of our lives, such as he/she/they, the majority of us not giving them a second thought. However, they are not just a way to identify someone, they are a regular day-to-day indicator of our gender. It is commonplace in our society to assume someone’s pronouns based on little more than appearance; this can negatively affect people who are transgender or gender non-conforming as how we all perceive each other is subjective. Being referred to with the wrong pronoun can reinforce the difficulties some people face.
The idea behind International Pronoun Day is “to make asking, sharing and respecting personal pronouns commonplace.”
It is designed to encourage all of us to share our pronouns, whoever we are, with people we meet, in our places of work and on social media. In doing this, we can create a more inclusive and respectful society by turning sharing our pronouns into the everyday norm.
