‘So-called Victory’

Dear HIP,

Re your article about Southern Water, and the so-called victory of receiving a bit of compensation:

No, of course Southern Water hasn’t “rebuilt trust” with its ‘customers’. Firstly, we are not customers. Since our government has abandoned Labour’s former policy of taking water back into public ownership, we are forced to use companies like Southern Water. It’s not a customer choice.

Secondly, you say that households will receive £50 for every 12 hours without water and that some will receive “up to £250”, but those of us living near the town centre were without water for five days. I make that £500 we are owed.

I think it’s also important to make the point that Southern Water have been citing ‘maintenance’ and ‘environmental’ and ‘infrastructure improvements’ as their excuse for rising bills for years, whilst handing vast amounts of our money to bosses and shareholders, so I don’t think they should get away with claiming the extortionate rises of the next few years are for that work as well. They have already been paid to do it.

Coast versus Inland

Dear HIP

It has long been a complete nonsense for Hastings to be wrapped around by Rother, so the move toward unitary authorities makes sense on that basis alone. However, this new arrangement must be intended to be long term, so the idea of some sort of coastal community authority is just asking for problems, including a clash with whoever runs the inland areas. This is because large areas of the coastal strip will, over the next two or three generations, be hit by extensive flooding, and movement along the coast east to west will become very limited; no rail line and no A259. When hundreds of existing homes and businesses etc are flooded and can no longer obtain insurance cover – and that is happening already – development within existing rural areas will be unavoidable.

Given that the water companies cannot cope with this town’s sewage now, how on earth are they going to cope with more builds added? Surely it would be better if Southern Water sorted it all out before any decisions are made of what and where.
