Drainage History

Dear HIP

Picking up on Martin Griffiths’ letter regarding the town centre flooding (HIP 239), I think we all need to be told of the usefulness or otherwise of the works undertaken by Southern Water in 1998.

This £50m scheme involved the boring of tunnels from Alexandra Park to the town centre and a massive storage facility and pumping station at Warrior Square. The intention was to alleviate flooding in the town. It clearly hasn’t worked. Could someone from Southern Water please explain?

An excellent source of information on the Southern Water Storm Drain Project is available at historymap.info/Southern_Water_Storm_Drain.

Where she stands

Interesting article on Helen Dollimore in HIP 237. I wonder if I’m the only constituent currently wondering where Cllr. Dollimore stands on the very pressing issue of a ceasefire in Gaza. Given her humanitarian work, and the fact that we’re hitting somewhere around 12,000 dead (as of 20 November), I’d be interested to know.

GB News reporting

Thanks for an honest report on the landslip (West Hill Road Landslide – Whose Responsibility? in HIP 239). I hope everyone has been able to return home safely. Guess what GB News said about it – “Several homes have fallen into a crevice”. Final proof that they should not be allowed to describe themselves as a news channel!

Unpicked Litter

I feel for Deborah R. and local residents with the noise pollution (Beef Around Wellington in HIP 239).

A further concern, as a local who regularly walks down through The Square, is the abundance of litter, literally everywhere!

I have to say there seems to be something very bad going on at the top of The Square too, with the countless wheelie bins on both sides of the exit regularly overflowing onto the pavement with surplus household waste, plus countless buildings materials etc.

Back down at the lower end of The Square, public litter blows up the slope from York Gardens night and day, entangling with trees, shrubs and under car wheels on the way up.

Not surprisingly, the bright colours of McDonalds & KFC overwhelmingly rule here.  Back in the day, these big guns had daily local litter-picking rotas for staff to help protect the local environment.  I’m guessing any wider TLC-type thinking is long gone now as – despite continuing to claim to be green-conscious in all their packaging – there’s no £s benefit to be had in picking it up.
