West St Leonards campaign continues
Campaigners concerned for the future of the old bathing pool site in West St. Leonards are planning a virtual protest on Saturday 5th December.
Save our Bathing Site (SOBS) and the West Marina Group (WMG) want to symbolically represent signatories to a petition opposing current council plans to build 152 houses on the green space.
Local community activists point out that the floodplain location of the former 1930s Lido is the last green space in the area linking the sea with the land and its future use should be for multiple leisure and social amenity purposes. They claim Hastings Borough Council’s decision-makers have failed to engage with local community groups despite two protest gatherings on the disputed land.
The SOBS and WMG petition is intended to demonstrate the strength of local opposition to current development plans. Begun in June 2020 during the COVID-19 restrictions, it has so far attracted over 1950 objectors – and the organisers are keen to reach the symbolic number of 2020.
