Town Says No to Casinos
Hastings Borough Council Leader Cllr Glenn Haffenden and Deputy Leader Cllr Julia Hilton have joined over 35 other councils in signing a letter calling on the government to reform gambling laws, specifically to halt the expansion of adult gaming centres and to introduce a comprehensive ban on all gambling advertising. The letter also calls for councils to be given new powers to reject gambling license applications when they pose risks to community welfare.
Cllr Haffenden said that councils “need the ability to refuse licences where there is clear evidence of harm. This is about giving communities the tools to create safer, healthier environments.”
The move follows the approval by the Council’s Cabinet of an updated Gambling Statement of Principles and a No Casino Resolution as part of a move to reinforce the town’s commitment to protecting vulnerable residents.
