Both beaches have been given a Seaside Award identifying them as “clean, safe and well-managed”. Criteria for this judgment include effective litter control and waste disposal, also provision of safety and first aid services,

Camber Sands and the beach at Bexhill have received similar Seaside Awards.

The Marina beach has also won a Blue Flag Award, denoting “excellent bathing water quality”. That quality is required to be checked regularly from samples taken near potential pollution sources including streams and storm-water outlets.

Borough council leader Glenn Haffenden takes particular satisfaction from this latter award. “These strict environmental criteria around water quality have been challenging with issues with Southern Water”, he said. “We meet regularly with them around their infrastructure investment in Hastings, and will continue to pressure them to improve the water quality and service in Hastings.”
