Social Housing at Blackfriars Site
Rother District Council Housing Company (RDCHC) has announced a partnership with national social enterprise company, Places for People, to enable 130 out of an estate of 200 new homes being built in Battle to be sold or let as ‘affordable’.
Rother owns the site at Blackfriars off Marley Lane through RDCHC, and granted itself planning permission last February for the development to proceed without any proportion of the units being reserved for social housing. However, at that stage Neil Tickle, the housing company’s Chief Operating Officer, expressed the hope that the majority of homes would in due course be sold to a registered provider of affordable homes, and that seems to be on track to happen.
Building is intended to begin early this year following completion of a spine road through the estate, with the first units planned to be completed by December and the full estate by the autumn of 2027. There’ll be a mix of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom properties, all featuring air source heat pumps and electric vehicle charge points. Places for People will sell some of their 130 properties on the basis of shared ownership, while letting others at affordable rents. The remaining 70 will be sold by RDCHC on the open market.
