Fire officers have praised staff working on the pier for their quick response to a fire which broke out on Saturday morning in the Pavilion restaurant.

The blaze, which started behind a wall panel before spreading up the wall, was caused by an electrical fault in the wiring. Four fire engines raced to the scene and the flames were quickly extinguished. No-one was hurt.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Station Commander Dan Channon paid tribute to the staff for their swift action. “They noticed the fire alarms going off and recognised an electrical rubber burning smell. The pier was evacuated in a matter of minutes.”

He added: “Because of the glass facade of the cafe, we had a good view of the fire, and we quickly went in and dealt with it.”
