Disgruntled residents could have a say
Residents could be asked for their views on proposed increases in parking charges if East Sussex County Council approves a six-week public consultation for the scheme this Monday (17th June).
In Hastings, the proposals would see the cost of an annual permit for a first vehicle rise from £75.00 to £95.00 a year, while the cost of pay and display road parking would double. A one hour stay in the Old Town, for example, currently £1.50, would be £2.95, while an hour’s on-road parking in the town centre would go from £1.00 to £2.00.
ESCC says its new scheme would make the cost of parking permits fairer by standardising prices across Hastings, Eastbourne and Lewes. Currently Eastbourne residents pay just £25 a year for a parking permit. However, all motorists will all see a rise in on-road parking costs.
The council says that extra revenue from the higher charges which isn’t spent on operational costs will be spent on public transport. It is offering reduced cost permits for owners of vehicles with lower emissions and says the scheme will encourage people to use more sustainable transport and help manage the growing demand for parking in order to improve the air quality in busy town centres.
