My Art Belongs to Daddy
Hastings resident Phil Cooper watched a live TV stream of the Grammy Awards, the US music equivalent of the Oscars, with personal interest last week. His daughter Em Cooper was a nominee in the Best Music Video category as director of her three-minute animated film illustrating the Beatles’ song I’m only sleeping from their 1966 album Revolver.
She won the gong, and in her excited acceptance speech gave credit not only in time-honoured fashion to her production team and her immediate family but, in particular, to her father “for teaching me to paint”. She said she had produced more than 1,300 oil paintings for the animation.
Phil is duly modest about his four seconds of global recognition, but recalls, on reminder from Em, that he had spent many hours teaching her (and her sister and brother) “how to look, and how to paint and draw…We always took a paint box and pencils on every holidays so we could sit and draw or paint the view in front of us”.
