Hastings Marks Cinque Ports Speaker’s Day
Hastings’ Mayor and Speaker of the Cinque Ports, Cllr Becca Horn, hosted a procession of Cinque Ports mayors and town clerks through the streets of Hastings last Saturday (27 Saturday) to mark the Confederation’s Speaker’s Day. They were joined on the parade by the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex and the High Sheriff, along with many other VIPs.
Speaker’s Day on George Street
There are seven Cinque Ports towns and each year, in rotation, the mayor of one of the five head ports and two ‘ancient towns’ is appointed as Speaker. The Speaker acts as chair and principal representative of the Cinque Ports Confederation and Cllr Horn took up the role at a special meeting in May.
The colourful procession from Muriel Matters House to the St Clement’s Church in the Old Town was led by the Section 5 Drummers. Following a church service, the dignitaries made their way to the Stade Hall aboard Happy Harold, the old Hastings trolleybus, for a formal lunch to mark the occasion. They were greeted on arrival by the local Hastings RX Morris dancers.
