Hart endorses Sunak
Sally-Ann Hart, MP for Hastings & Rye, has broken her silence on the Conservative leadership contest, endorsing Rishi Sunak as prospective successor to Boris Johnson. She issued a statement on Twitter that she was “proud” to be supporting him – “his diligence and seriousness is exactly what the country, and our area, needs to get us through the challenging times ahead”.
Mrs Hart made her preference public only after the contest was reduced to a shoot-out between Mr Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, giving no indication whether she had voted for other candidates in the several ballots among Tory MPs last month. She said that this was due to her recent own election to the 1922 Committee Executive which conducted these on behalf of the party.
Local Conservative members have until 2 September to cast their votes between Mr Sunak and Ms Truss, with national surveys currently predicting victory for the latter by a substantial margin.
