Under the heading Hastings Castle World Heritage Destination, the borough council’s Town Deal website describes upgrading of the castle as “our flagship, signature project for the whole Hastings Town Investment Plan”. The stated timeline for this projected development, which was scheduled last year to cost £5.65m (£3.5m from the Towns Fund plus £2.15 matched funds from Historic England and other contributories) includes:

Spec. development and business case: Autumn 2021; 

Planning and Historic England permissions: Winter 2021 – Summer/Autumn 2022.

However, on the council’s newly unveiled “Citizen Lab” website (se more here), the Castle project is described as “still in its very early stages”, and members of the public are invited to express views and ideas of what they would “like” there.

In the meantime the council has recently appointed Mott MacDonald, a global consultancy firm based in Croydon,  “to help develop the plans” for the castle. They made their first site visit to Hastings on 29 March.
