A new cafe for the ‘meeple’ of Hastings

There’s a new hangout spot in Hastings Old Town for all to enjoy. Whether you’re looking for something different to do on a mid-week evening, a fun afternoon with the kids, or a relaxing way to round off the weekend, Hastings Board Game Cafe and Museum is a great choice.
I popped in on a Sunday afternoon, just a week after opening to find a busy, vibrant cafe with plenty to offer. I went as part of a couple and we were seated swiftly and presented with a menu, for both food & drink and the games. Gary, the owner, came and spoke to us, to help us select a game to suit our mood, which is wonderfully helpful as the shelves are packed full of colourful games.

There are too many games to mention – 860 are listed in the library section of their website. They come from Gary’s personal collection, so he is well versed in the rules and able to pinpoint a few perfect options. Rhino Hero is a popular choice for families and Cascadia for couples, but there really is something for everyone.
We all know that Hastings is a drinking town with a fishing problem, which is part of its charm, and can be great – but if you’re after a family-friendly, or alcohol-free free outing that won’t cost you
a bomb AND keep everyone entertained, more lateral thinking is required. And that’s where Gary and his cafe come in. The café stocks a wide range of paninis, wraps and sandwiches as well as other savoury snacks and ‘sweet treats’, a kids’ menu and several vegan options. Of course, if you want to spice up your games night with a drink or two, it’s BYOB.
I spoke to Gary, and he told me that he opened the shop as he wanted to give something back to the community.
“I’m looking to make an inviting and comfortable space here right in the heart of the old town!”
With a corporate background, this truly is a passion project for Gary, supported by his young family, he’s building a fun space for all ages to enjoy.
If you’re already a regular board game player, you’ll know how expensive it is to buy board games. This way you can try a huge variety at a fraction of the cost! And if you decide you just can’t get enough of a certain game, there is a great range of games for sale – and you can try before you buy.
This is a welcome addition to our town and community, especially now the weather is getting wetter, windier, and frankly more miserable – it’s the perfect spot to brighten up your day whether you’re a board game newbie or seasoned player!
