Poetry Corner: To the thick of the forest
ROY DUFFIELD
your black eyes
and your ears that do not yield
the right grain, they say
are too poor to enter
here, in this garden
party debate, underfed
by a mind malnourished
on peer-reviewed leaves, unbound
for HMS
Victory, unprinted
by the Oxford University
Press—a willow
is closer to Rousseau’s
position on education as a marker
of social mobility
than to an oak
and it’s high time you learnt
your place-
setting / at the bottom
of these woods
