Poetry Corner: THE SUNKEN FOREST
HENRY NORMAL
In a time before humans could write
here, they looked down from their caves
onto the tops of trees
Then the mere movement of liquid
slowly wore away this raised sandstone
flooding the woodland below
As fresh water turned to salt
oak, birch and hazel
bore their last leaves
Now, at the lowest tide
when storms have stirred the sediment
if you spy beyond the shingle
in amongst the rockpools
ancient roots and saplings
seek the sky once more
