Poetry Corner: heatwaves
PETE DONOHUE
the memory of rain upon this land
dragged from a cooler distance
called out several weeks beforehand
when times seemed somehow greener
squeezes a tear out onto my dehydrated face
barely enough to irrigate my feelings
at suppertime yesterday
a bold moon took issue with the sun
challenging its known ferocity
altering the skyline & silencing animals
to the general delight of most
albeit only temporarily
we will have longed-for water
upon this land once more
only how then we choose to use it
& how long it may this time last
becomes the burning question
for each & every one of us.
