There Is The Sea
VERNON KEITH FOWLER
There is the sea, the ever-changing sea,
And there is the castle, standing on the hill.
There is the sea, the sea which is never still,
And there is the castle, on the promontory.
There were the Normans, the men who came and won,
And there is the castle they built to firm their reign.
There is the sea, the ever moving main,
And there is the castle, by William the First begun.
There is the sky, the vast and endless sky
Over the castle – at least, what we can see,
The half that did not fall into the sea,
The half that meets the present watcher’s eye.
There is the sea, where mighty ships still sail,
And there is the castle, standing on the hill.
There is the castle, stony-faced and still.
And there is the sea, echoing its tale.
