Two Ships Come Sailing Back
BEN THOMPSON
Following on from last year’s joyful event at The Nest, Hastings improvised music trailblazers Two Ships have programmed a second ambitious international festival, this time at The Beacon on Saturday 18 May. Kicking off the proceedings at the appropriate time of 3pm, saxophonist Rachel Musson (pictured) is typical of the top level acts they’ve attracted. Her recent album Ashes and Dust, Earth and Sky is an exquisite pastoral bricolage of field recordings, singing bowl, church bells and even some actual musical instruments.

It’ll be a treat to see her perform it live on a day which also promises Icelandic sound sculptures (from Lilja Maria Asmundsdottir), a new local supergroup featuring Tara Franks, Ruby Colley, Tullis Rennie and Aram Zarakian, and a Danish free sax from Signe Emmeluth. A climactic coup will take place in the shape-shifting guise of Trance Map+, which is a collaboration between acclaimed composer/turntablist Matt Wright, Two Ships’ very own double bass wizard, Olie Brice, and godfather of British free improvisation, Evan Parker.
Tickets are on sale at a range of price points according to ability to pay, from twoship.eventbrite.co.uk and the organisers would appreciate it if Hastings (and St Leonards) could break the habit of a lifetime by buying tickets in advance.
