AMANDA BROOKS enters the fascinating worlds of Codex Serafini, Cosmic Whip and Beau

‘Saturnian Galaxy Wanderers’ and Saturnalian, heavy psych band, Codex Serafini, are a sight and sound to bear close examination. Not only do they perform with obscured identity, leaving the audience itching to take a snoop under the band’s facial red-herrings, but the music itself energises onlookers into an alternative, pulsating universe.

Perfectly Pitched Assertion

Self-ruled, Codex Serafini seem almost telepathic in their approach to performing. They symbolise complete freedom, with sounds of unrestrained psych rock rhythm. Bass, saxophone, rhythm and lead guitars allow enough elbowroom for the solidity of the rhythm section, resulting in a sense of non-confinement. The soaring lead vocal, with heavy delay and reverb effects, delivers perfectly pitched assertion, becoming an expanding symmetry of vocal expression and skill. The band members, ritualistic in their aesthetic attributes, are shrouded in long, brightly coloured robes, magnifying their other-worldly edge.

Post-punk deconstruction

Beau deliver palatable punk rock, existing in their own right with no holds barred. The rawness of the sound includes hard-hitting guitar, heavy, driving bass and drums played in unison with the lead vocalist, who gets in on the beat with his own setup of percussion instruments and drums. This doubling-up effect enhances the sound of the rock hard, rhythmic guts of the band, conveying penetrating and rugged arrangements. Interesting, and entertaining.

Piloting the machine

If you believe that we all work to higher vibrational frequencies, cyclical drifters Cosmic Whip are on high alert deeply to excite them. Intensely felt, cadenced, and hypnotic bass lines deliver powerful depth to what can be described as a monument of sonic density. Sumptuous guitar and percussive rhythms offer ground-swelling energy and audience anticipation, along with reverberated sonic modification devices that sculpt sound from one instrument’s sound source into another. Smoothly instrumental, multi-layered and tight, Cosmic Whip have a curious ability to transfix the audience, carefully navigating them through passageways destined for harmonious cognition.
