Palmerama Comedy Anniversary
RUBY LAMBERT
The Palmerama comedy showcase recently celebrated its third anniversary by bringing together seven distinct voices for an evening of laughter. Each comedian delivered their own unique act. The overall tone of the night, however, leaned towards personal storytelling and sharply observational humour. The event was hosted in Tintins, a small local pub, which made it feel very intimate, and distinctive to Hastings.
Some comedians touched on family disaster, while others reflected on broader topics like current events and the character of Hastings. It felt like a night where all audiences would be able to engage with the comedians, an essential part of this kind of event. There is no knowing quite what type of audience this type of event will attract, so variety is important.
The standout of the night was Fran Longstaff’s set, in which she explored themes of family and location after moving to the Sussex area, and her own adjustment to living in the South. The audience engaged with all her jokes, which were locally relevant and readily set up the night for success.
Overall, the event was a fun and memorable time which drew in new audiences continuously throughout the night. It was a clear celebration of this show, and of how much Dan Palmer has learned through hosting these events. I really enjoyed each comedian’s unfiltered humour. Palmerarama’s Comedyrama, Hastings’ only monthly comedy night, is a great pointer to the future of comedy in Hastings.
