Avid readers of this publication will know that we have been supporting the erotic postcards exhibition at 1200 Postcards on Queens Road, for which crime we have apparently fallen out with the good faceless pilgrims of Facebook. Nevertheless, we at HIP toddled along to have a look at what local artists have made of the brief of conveying something a bit intense within a ‘wish you were here’ sort of space. So to speak.

Actually, it is pretty intriguing: sort of obvious-dodgy and aesthetically uplifting at the same time. All of which depends, I suppose, on what particular individuals find crude and what others find enticing. Either way, it is fascinating in that the exhibition plays along the line between erotic and just plain crass. Catering for most tastes; but inevitably, no doubt, not all.

Perhaps what should be really stressed is that on April 16 the pub will be holding an auction in order to raise funds for the charity Haven Distribution which believes in the power of education and raises money in order to help for books for prisoners. 1200 Postcards is a delightful pub: they serve brilliant Tanqueray and some pretty rarefied but absolutely decent real ales.

We live in an odd age: when prudish censoriousness sits alongside a web of infinite sexualized grubbiness. Whichever way you look at these things – if that is not too ‘Carry On’ a phrase – it should be an interesting auction for a cause that definitely doesn’t get enough airtime.

The auction is upstairs at 1200 Postcards at 7.30pm on 16 April.
