In Don’t Make a Scene, Merryl’s twenty-five years of experience as PA to celebrities in the world of theatre and media are fashioned into a frothy, fast-moving account of the trials and tribulations of Maddy. She longs to become a script-writer but meanwhile has to pay her rent by dealing with clients who are needy, crazy and sometimes dangerous in their demands. Find and fix my Cartier watch is an acceptable task, but not Take the points on your licence for my speeding offence. And what about: I’m in New York and it’s freezing, can you send my parka? As her sensible friend tells her: “Your clients wouldn’t last five minutes in the real world.” She copes so brilliantly with the neediness and craziness that one longs for her to turn her skills from fixing Cartier watches and getting tots in Primrose Hill into mindfulness classes to something more worthwhile. Becoming the homelessness tsar perhaps? Managing the national potholes crisis? On the evidence of her competence that we see here, Maddy could certainly give either a try.
