Disappearance of The Humble Sparrow (Red/Mustard/Violet)

Rachel Williams is a mixed media artist. Her bold, quirky, and apparently playful, works often carry a brooding gritty undertone. By employing an agglomeration of printmaking, painting, collage, stitching onto a variety of surfaces, her work is a lively regurgitation of current obsessions. Her most recent output concerns the vulnerability of existence in the natural world with inspiration coming from iconography and primitive depiction of the cave paintings of Lascaux and Australia.
Greatly influenced by her surroundings, the effect of moving to St Leonards on Sea from rural Italy in 2017 has produced a profound shift in subject matter and process: with a movement away from abstracts to a more urban, satirical approach.
Rachel says: “As part of on-going investigations concentrating on endangered animals, I have been making a series of Disappearance of The Humble Sparrow monotypes. Many have a ghostly skull-like appearance, and some are very much alive. The same elements are used in differing orders, colours and combinations to make individual birds. It is of endless fascination this ‘similarity and difference’ – the way in which we, and animals, are able to distinguish one animal or person from another by subtle differences in features.”
