The groups hail from the National Citizen Service (NCS) which is a volunteering programme for 15-17 year olds. The NCS sets up teams to support local charities in the United Kingdom. Two Hastings teams have chosen to support and raise money for Demelza Hospice and the NCS Street Aid project. The Hospice is a charity supporting children with life-limiting or
life-threatening conditions and their grief-stricken families. Their specialist nurses provide beneficial care and support, allowing a child or young person to continue life as normally as possible with minimal disruptions. Street Aid is an NCS social action project being run by a group of young people who aim to raise awareness and improve the life of homeless people in Hastings.

From Monday 13th August to Thursday 16th August both teams raised money by busking, collecting on Hastings streets, holding a pub quiz at the Senlac Inn in Battle, conducting a sponsored walk and hosting a barn dance at St Helen’s Church in Ore. There was also a cake sale and performance on the pier by Battle-based band the Wingmen. Another NCS team has been working to raise awareness of and support for the local LGBT+ community.
