Most of us have to work, but how does what we do effect the wider economy, and the shape of our local area? These questions lie at the heart of a fascinating Worker Education Association class ‘Sussex at Work’ – beginning in January – examining the county’s industries and worklife, past and present.

Sussex is not thought of as an industrial county, but has important seaports and once hosted a flourishing iron industry. However, is work just about ‘industry’? What about our own work-patterns and those of our parents and grandparents? How does the industrial history of our county contrast with the hi-tech revolution replacing traditional forms of employment?

‘Sussex by the Sea’ conveys images of fun-filled beaches and piers, theatres and hotels, but who works in those ‘pleasure-domes’? Local towns are also home to colleges and universities, an increasingly important part of the local economy.

‘Sussex at Work’ is part of a wide-ranging programme of WEA classes in Hastings and
St Leonards.

Course dates: 09/01/2019 – 20/03/2019, Wednesdays 10.00am.
Venue: Fellowship of St Nicholas Centre, London Road,
St Leonards-on-Sea.
Course reference 3743288. For further details and to book online: wea.org.uk or ring 0300 303 3464.
