A series of online videos are now available to help parents and carers support their children to manage a range of mental health conditions.

Did you know that the Oxford University Press word of the year in 2021 from a panel of young people was anxiety? (in the previous three years it was plastic, Brexit and Coronavirus respectively). Understandably, the first video workshop focuses on this issue.

The live workshops, which were recorded in May this year, also deal with autism, eating disorders and sleep problems, with more workshops to be added over the coming months. More than 2,300 people have tuned in to watch these sessions live – which shows the level of interest in these subjects – and their accessible and informative presentation should ensure continued success.

The videos should prove a vital resource for parents and carers, particularly during the school summer holidays when they can access the extra support they may need.

Kate Stammers, Clinical Lead for Sussex Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), explains that the workshops are a vital tool in helping parents and carers understand their children’s mental health and what they can do to support them.

“We recognise the impact of the pandemic on children and young people’s mental health and these workshops will help give some clarity to families who may be unsure how to handle certain situations.”

Each workshop is accessible with subtitles and gives an overview of a specific difficulty and also some hints and tips on how young people can be supported. There are also links to other resources that parents may find helpful.
